Livewell takes on water when moving.

    I have a new 2012 Hurricane 187 Outboard.
We have noticed that the live well takes on water all the time when on the way.  I do not need to turn on the pump.
What I noticed is the intake for the the pump is a that bottom of the boat.  There is a cover protecting the openning.   One half is solid the other is a grill to allow water.
I suspect it was installed backward as the grill is forward.  The guard is acting as a diverter forcing water into the intake and filling the livewell.
Can you confirm that this is the case?
Is there anything I should know before I reverse it (use of silicone, etc...)?
    Thank you,
