Can't open engine cover

I have 2008 Sundeck 24 witgh a Volvo Penta 5.7 and the batteries have died over the winter. They will not take a charge by the inverter port. I have tried lifting the engine cover to access the batteries and have been unable to move it up more than 2 inches. I suspect that the engine cover lift ram is not allowing me to open it. Does anyone have any suggestions how to open it to access the batteries.
